What is Homeopathy?
Homeopathy is a system of natural health care that has been in worldwide use for over 200 years. It was developed by the German physician Samuel Hahnemann in the late 1700s. It is recognized by the World Health Organization as the second largest therapeutic system in use in the world. While it is most popular in India and South America, over thirty million people in Europe (and millions of others around the world) also benefit from its use!
The word homeopathy is derived from the Greek, meaning “similar suffering.” Homeopathy is based on the principle of “The Law of Similars.” This means like cures like. For example, a person who has a cold with profuse tearing from the eyes and nose may be given the homeopathic remedy Allium cepa, which is derived from the onion plant. Their cold symptoms are similar to those experienced when one peels or cuts an onion.
Homeopathy is individualistic.
Each person’s symptoms are unique to them and expressive of their individual condition. If two people are experiencing a headache, for example, a different homeopathic remedy could be given to each person based on the symptoms that the person is experiencing. One person may describe their headache pain as being hammering and pounding, with the headache coming on suddenly and felt primarily on the right side of the head. Another person may experience a headache with pains that are bursting and crushing. Any movement makes the pain worse, even the slightest eye movement. This person may also be extremely thirsty for cold drinks. These are two different headaches clearly requiring two distinctly different homeopathic remedies.
Homeopathic remedies are made from natural substances.
There are over 5000 homeopathic remedies. They are made from plants, minerals, metals, animals, foods and biological sources. Homeopathy is an energy medicine. The substance goes through a potentization process of dilution and succussion (shaken vigorously) many times, transforming the substance into the energy pattern of that substance. Homeopathic remedies are non-toxic, gentle in their actions, and have no side effects. They are safe to use with babies, children, adults, and animals. They are not tested on animals.
How does classical homeopathy differ from other homeopathic methods?
Classical Homeopathy takes the perspective that we are in one state at a time so, therefore, we need one homeopathic remedy at a time. We may experience many symptoms, but the symptoms are all parts of one state. The homeopathic remedy addresses the whole person: mind, body, spirit, and emotions.
